Ork Battlewagon page 4.

During the painting process, I used a number of steampunk illustrations to help me select colors. I include a beautiful sample illustration by
Nicholas Cole, to show the kind of art that was informing my choices.
I agonized a bit about how to prime the wagon.

With as much hard-to-see and hard-to-reach detail as there is on the wagon, I was loath to prime it in black and compromise my ability to see what I was doing -- besides I didn't want the wagon to look quite as "sharp" as black primer tends to make minis look.

I didn't want to prime it in white, as I didn't want the colors to be too bright.

I finally decided to prime it in brown. My hope was that brown would bring out the earthier "warmer" tones associated with steampunk, and help me stress the steampunk character of the wagon.

Sadly, I couldn't find a brown primer. And I got impatient. So I went to my next choice, and used a grey primer.

I was surprised at how well the Armory spray grey primer covered, including inside the hatch on the top of the tank, wthout going on too thick.

Finally, I could put brush to model.

I started with Citadel Colours Terracotta -- for the Kannon's swivel, for the underside of the Kannon on the underside of the overhang, for the top of the Kannon turret, for the big shoota turret on the underside of the overhang, for the dozer blade and hardware, and for the tank wheels.

I painted the armored plates on the tank, the underside of the tank, as well as the floor and underside of the overhang, with Citadel Colours Gore Red (such a pretty name for such a pretty color).

The top of the tank and the walls of the overhang were painted with Citadel Colours Snakebite Leather.

I used Citadel Colours Scorched Brown to paint the inside walls and floor of the tank, as well as the tank treads.

I used Citadel Colours Dwarf Bronze to paint the Kannon, all of the ladders on the tank, the steam boiler, the steam pipe, the boilder door, the vents on the tank body, and both scaffolds.

I used Citadel Colours Mithiril Silver to paint the trim on the scaffolding, and the outer exposed part of the kannon turret (the basilisk platform).

I used boltgun metal for all of the weaponry other than the Kannon; the five big shootaz, the rokkit launcha and the skorcha.

I used Citadel Colours Sunburst Yellow, as well as the Scorched Bown, to detail the boiler door. I used the Terracotta to detail the steam boiler. I used Citadel Colours Chaos Black to paint the inside tip of the Kannon, and the open end of the steam pipe. I used the Chaos Black and Citadel Colours Blood Red to detail the Rokkit Launcha.
Now that I was done painting the main body, I was ready to work on the detail in stage 5.
